JAPAN IS IMPORTING LARGE AMOUNTS OF HAIR FROM CHINA

The natural hair is used to make hair extensions. There is a supply shortage and a surge in the cost. It takes the Chinese women about 3 years to grow hair to the floor. Drivers go to small villages, cut hair and give women small amounts of money.

After collected hair is bleached, dyed black or brown at processing plants and then exported to Japan. Japan imported 178 tons of dyed hair from China in 2007. In 2002 it was only 26 tons. It takes 50 grams of hair to make an extension. The hair imported in 2007 was enough to make3.56 million extensions.

The price for extensions in Japan is $100.00.The price of hair from China has gone up 50% from a year ago.It is a seller's market. Hair grows about 2 inches a month and 65 inch long extensions are the minimum. After 3 months use the hair deteriorates and has to be disposed of.
