Reports about what life is like inside the military prison for terrorism suspects at Guantanamo Bay are not uncommon. But very little is reported about two secretive units for convicted terrorists and other inmates who get 24-hour surveillance, right here in the U.S.
Population Inside The CMUs
Learn more about the prisoners NPR identified, including their cases and release dates.
For the first time, an NPR investigation has identified 86 of the more than 100 men who have lived in the special units that some people are calling "Guantanamo North." The Communications Management Units in Terre Haute, Ind., and Marion, Ill., are mostly filled with Muslims. About two-thirds of the inmates identified by NPR are U.S. citizens.
Civil rights groups have filed lawsuits that accuse the U.S. facilities of some of the same due process complaints raised by people at the island prison.

CUBA ALLOWING US TO USE AIRSPACE FOR HAITI
The United States has been granted rare permission to use Cuban airspace for aid and evacuation flights in the wake of Haiti's devastating earthquake.
The White House said in a statement today that they have coordinated with the Cuban government for authorization to fly medical evacuation flights from the US Naval Station Guantanamo Bay to Miami Florida, through Cuban airspace, cutting 90 minutes off one-way flight time.
This agreement puts aside decades of Cold War animosity between Washington and Cuba in order to help the injured and 300,000 Haitians made homeless by the 7.0 quake. Guantanamo is being used to give Haiti evacuees medical treatment.
There are an estimated 45,000 Americans in Haiti, some of whom were injured in the disaster.

INTERNATIONAL PEACEKEEPING FORCE SHOULD BLOW PIRATES OUT OF THE WATER
I think this would be the best solution. An Ethiopian -led force is leaving soon and the US wants to put an international peacekeeping force in Somalia. I think this would be a mistake. The US had to withdraw in the past, their mission failed.
The administration states that the US Navy is the world's predominate sea power and believes in freedom of navigation. Now the pirates are targeting cruise ships. Some countries are saying if they capture these pirates, where would they hold them and where would they go on trial. They do not want another Guantanamo Bay.
I believe that with our advanced technology, we could dispatch some fighter jets to the area of these freighters that are being approached by unknown boats and blow them out of the water.
